The business end of the season has arrived. After much preparation over the past 5 months, the start of the road to the National Stadium will begin this Sunday. The Mayo Championships weigh in & quarter finals take place in the St Annes BC gym in Westport. Entering these championships for Swinford will be Sean McSharry, Pierce Rowley, Ciara Sheedy and Aoife Hennigan.
Sean McSharry in his first competitive year will be hoping to win his first Mayo title. Preparations have been hampered by illness post Christmas, but Sean has been sparring well over the past month. Sean’s weight is a highly competitive division and Sean will have to box to his full potential in order to secure a title.
Pierce Rowley has been enjoying this year’s efforts, choosing to take a step back from the rigorous training regimes of the past few years for a lighter plan. Although making the decision to enter the championships late, it was made on the back of a few encouraging performances. Pierce will be looking for his forth Mayo title.
Ciara Sheedy will be looking to defend her Mayo title of last season. One of Mayo’s busiest boxers, Ciara has been in with the country’s best over the past four months. These preparations have elevated Ciara to another level of boxing, and this is the type of form she hopes will take her one step further, and to an Irish title for which she was narrowly defeated last season.
Aoife Hennigan will have one eye on Germany as she weighs in this weekend. Due to fly east of the Rhine at the end of the month on International duty, Aoife must first take to the scales in Westport. In what is hoped will be good prepartation for the International, Aoife will be hoping to secure her 5th Mayo title.
The club wishes our four boxers well.
