Night number two for White Collar Boxers

Last Friday night was session number two for our white collar participants. A large turnout again and a high tempo session, at which everyone impressed.

A good run was followed by a session of skills training, finished off with a bag “punch out”.

It was also time for everyone to get used of the gumshields in the mouth, and bandaging on the hands while training. No problems for anyone which is a result.

Next Friday is pad work night followed by a measure up, for some boxing gear. Looking forward to it already….

Ciara gearing up for Hungary

The work is now done, the talking over, and time for the action to begin.

The Irish team depart Dublin airport tomorrow morning for Hungary, and Ciara Sheedy will be looking to add to her ever growing medal haul, as she represents our country in the 63kg division.

Defending lightweight champion Katie Taylor is also included on the Irish team, ahead of Monday’s opening bell at the Helikon Hotel, venue for the 7th edition of the tournament. The 2013 EU Championships draw will be made at 11am (Irish time) Monday. Boxing commences that afternoon.

A further five Mayo boxers are also included in the Irish team, and the club wishes them the best of boxing.

51kg: Lycia Heneghan (Ballinrobe)

75kg: Katie Higgins (Ardnaree)

48kg: Jacqui Lynch (Golden Gloves)

54kg: Grainne Gavin (Castlebar)

60kg: Ciara Ginty (Geesala)

And so all eyes will be on the shores of Lake Balaton from Monday, as Irish boxing targets more medals in European competition. Twenty three nations will compete in the championships, and Swinford Boxing Club are proud that Ciara Sheedy will be amoung them. We wish her the best in her exploits. Updates from the event will be posted on this site. Go Ciara!

Swinford BC scoops six awards

Swinford Boxing Club scooped six awards at Saturday night’s Mayo Boxing Board awards dinner in Hotel Ballina.

After a superb first year in boxing, which included an appearance on the Katie Taylor, “Road to Rio” bill, Aoife Bredican scooped the Best Female newcomer award.

Jack Kavanagh was rewarded for another tough season’s boxing with two awards. Having contested 19 bouts this season Jack picked up the Most Active Male boxer award, along with the Best boxer of the Connacht Championships, after two great performances en route to capturing his second Connacht title.

Ciara Sheedy added to her growing trophy collection with two awards on the night. Ciara was honoured for her two National titles along with the Most Active Female boxer award.

After an eventful year, which included two Irish International appearances and a fourth Irish title, Aoife Hennigan was honoured for the third successive year, for her performances in capturing the National U21 title.

The large Swinford attendance on the night, enjoyed a great evening’s entertainment, alongside the recognition for four of it’s boxers. Celebrations went well into the early hours of the morning at the Ballina venue.

Successful first night’s training for our White Collars

Friday night was the first night’s training for our white collar participants.

A good attendance for night number 1 of the six weeks intensive training, saw 14 participants begin the journey, how many will finish is yet to be seen.

Signs are good though, as the coaches were surprisingly impressed by the standard. Augers well for the 2nd of August….

Exhibitions Evening a great Success

Yesterday saw St Anne’s BC Westport visit the Conway Gym & Fitness Centre for an evening of exhibitions. The standard of boxing was exceptional considering it was the first time in the ring for some of our newer members.

Featuring for Westport were Megan Gavin, Jordyn Burke, Gracjan Borowski, Amelia Bura, Emma Murray, Catherine Walsh and Emma Maxwell.

Representing Swinford were brother and sister duo Saoirse and Aidan Breen, sisters Erin and Serena McHugh, Sean McDonagh, Dylan Toner, Sean McSharry, Aoife Bredican, Chloe Moore, Saoirse Oliver, Amanda Walsh, on the comeback trail Victoria Harraghy. Making impressive debuts were Ewan Grady, Tyler Moran, Liam Groarke, Liam Giblin and Kevin Nestor, who revived a family boxing tradition. Completing the bill were the Rowley sisters, Lucy May, Grace and Molly, who made club history as the first trio of sisters to compete for the club.

A great night was had by all and the club cannot express how proud we are of everyone who took part. We honestly believe that there are big things to come from this bunch of young people.

Thanks to our friends from St Anne’s BC in Westport, it was a pleasure to host you all, as always. Thanks to all the parents and friends who supported the evening and all who gave of their time and energy to help out. It’s greatly appreciated.
